october budget

october budget
  1. Loft 3/4 sleeve tee in pink: $34.50 + 40% off = $20.70
  2. Loft 3/4 sleeve tee in white: $34.50 + 40% off = $20.70
  3. Loft striped fringe kimono: $69.50 + 40% off = $41.70
  4. Loft utility blouse: $49.50 + 40% off = $29.70
  5. American Eagle floral kimono: $19.95, on sale for $14.96 + 20% off = $11.97
  6. American Eagle navy cords: $54.95, on sale for $21.98
October budget: $146.75
fourth quarter budget: $600 - $146.75 in October = $453.25 remaining

I was apparently all about some pink and blues and some Loft and American Eagle this month. :) These 3/4 sleeve tees from Loft are so silky soft and a heavier weight (see how I wore the pink one here). I got both in an XL. I haven't had a chance to wear the utility blouse or poncho, but plan on wearing them while on vacation this week. The poncho is a one size fits all kinda deal and I got the utility blouse in a XL to have more of a drapey feel. I've really been into American Eagle's jeggings lately, so I picked up a navy pair of cords (size 16) the last time they were having a sale and threw in the kimono in order to qualify for the discount on the pants.

A short and sweet budget post this month. I've been busy, so less time to shop! (My overstuffed closet probably thanks me for that one.)

pin to present: fall placemat pillows

Stores may already have stopped carrying all the fall things and launched into full-blown Christmas - goodness, it's not even Halloween yet - but I'm still all about the pumpkins, crisp leaves and fall weather. This past weekend I put out some fall decorations, including two fun fall pillow DIYs. Both use placemats and were relatively simple to make. Below are instructions for both, in case you want to add a little autumn cheer to your house as well!

DIY felt leaf placemat pillow
total cost: $6.28

step 1: Gather supplies
step 2: Pin the felt placement into place
step 3: Whip stitch into place

DIY placemat toss pillow
  • placemat (Target for $4.99)
  • 2" ribbon (Michaels $3.99 + 40% off coupon = $2.39)
  • 1/2" ribbon (Michaels $1)
  • 14" zipper (Michaels for $2.49 + 40% off coupon = $1.49)
  • 14x18 pillow insert (already had on hand)
  • navy thread (already had on hand)
  • white thread (already had on hand)
  • scissors
  • straight pins
  • sewing machine or needle
total cost: $9.87

step 1: Gather supplies
step 2: Cut backside of placemat (make sure the placemat you use has a front and back - two pieces sewn together)
step 3: Cut 2" ribbon to the length of the placemat + 1" (mine were 15"). Fold and sew the raw edges using either a sewing machine or by hand. Tip: I used a lighter to melt the edges of the ribbon to prevent fraying.
step 4: Fold ribbon in half and pin to the opening of the placemat
step 5: Sew ribbon in place
step 6 (optional): I decided to add a contrasting 1/2" ribbon using steps 3-5.
step 7: Add zipper. This step may not be necessary, depending of the fullness of your pillow insert. Once I had stuffed my pillow into the finished case, the back wanted to gap, so I opted to add a zipper so it would lay nice and flat. I placed the zipper along the ribbon edge opening and sewed down. I did trim a bit off the bottom of the zipper and sewed back and forth about a half inch above the cut edge to secure.

There you have it, two easy pillow DIYs that add a fun fall flair to your holiday decor.
If you're curious, the navy gingham pillow are from $1-$3-$5 aisle at Target, the garnet and gray check pillows and harvest pillow are from JoAnn Fabrics and the silver velvet pillow is from Pier1. The cream crochet throw was made by a cousin as a wedding present.

fall vacation packing list

Tomorrow begins of our much anticipated family vacation to the Tennessee mountains! The husband, kiddo and I are making the trek to my parent's house in Chattanooga tomorrow, then the whole crew (parents, brother, sister, brother-in-law and fours nieces and nephews) are caravanning it to Gatlinburg. My sweet parents hosted the same trip last year, and we all had such a good time, my parent's decided to do it again this year. Can't say I'm complaining...:)

It's supposed to be unseasonably warm again this year, so once again packing's a bit of challenge with cool temps at night in the morning, with warm afternoons. So, I decided to go with lots of light layers in a soft color palette.

tops: Mountains are calling tee (exact)  |  J. Crew stripe shirt (exact)  |  Loft pink tee (exact)  |  Loft gray tee (similar)  bottoms: American Eagle pink jeans (exact)  |  American Eagle skinny jeans (exact)  |  American Eagle navy cords (exactlayering pieces: Loft stripe poncho (exact)  |  J. Crew Factory dot puffer vest (exact)  |  Banana Republic cream cardigan (similar)  |  Old Navy cargo jacket (similaraccessories and shoes:  Ann Taylor blush scarf (similar)  |  J. Crew dot scarf (similar)  |  Stella & Dot triangle tile tote (cork version)  |  Society saddle bag (exact)  |   Sperry stripe sneakers (exact)  |  Michael Kors moccasins (exact in cognac)  |  Stella & Dot earrings (exact)  |  Fossil gold watch (same face with a leather band)

I kinda have a feeling that a lot of these layers won't be necessary, but a girl can dream right? It's funny, looking at the weather it's cool now, it's going to be cool after, but unseasonably warm the whole time we're there. Doesn't mother nature know this Florida girl is desperate to get her scarves and layers on? Oh, well, it'll be fun even if it is a little toastier than normal!

favorite sales:

  • what I'm reading: After finishing up Jenny Colgan's "Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe," I moved right to "The Loveliest Chocolate Shop in Paris." Not a sequel, but in a similar vein.
  • what I'm watching: Still working our way through Chuck before it leaves Netflix on November 1 and just watched the first episode of Steampunk'd - kinda like Project Runway or meets, well Steampunk.
  • what I'm listening to: Regina Spektor's new album "Remember Us to Life."
  • what I'm crushing on: Jonesing for scarf weather and these are a few of my favorites: this gorgeous watercolor infinity, this fun burgundy and cream stripe triangle and this tribal blank and white print.
  • what I'm looking forward to: That's easy...vacation! We're going on a family trip to Gatlinburg at the end of the week and I'm beyond excited to have a break, take in some fall color, and *hopefully* get to wear some scarves and layers!

pink + red

I can't say red and pink are two colors I typically would pair together - especially since it brings to mind hearts and flowers and all things Valentines - but I've been trying to come up with ways to transition my beloved midi skirts into fall, and when I saw the two colors together (shamefully when tossed into the same clothes pile) I thought I'd give it a whirl.

I'm not completely sold on the color combo, but that may be because I don't feel like I'm looking 100% these days. Too much stress = bags under the eyes, a bloated face and a couple of extra pounds. Bleh. But anyway, keeping it real here folks, a girl can't look glamorous every day. :) But not to fret, glorious - much needed - vacation is only one short week away!

bare toes

Your eyes are not deceiving you...I am flaunting bare toes in the middle of October. Since it's still all super warm in Florida, I thought, why not? If I can't wear my beloved scarves, might as well rock the sandals. Or something like that anyway...

However sandals are one of my favorite things, so I can't complain too much. In my perfect world it would be scarf and sandal weather all day everyday. :) Maybe I should work on a light scarf/sandal ensemble...#outfitgoals

Speaking of things I love right now, how fun is this rose gold Kendra Scott nail polish? A birthday present from the hubs, I've had it in on my toes for almost three weeks and it still looks great with zero chipping or touch ups. Not trying to sell you on it, just wanted to let you know how pleased I've been with it!

project 366: september

In an effort to capture more of the everyday moments, I'm using my iPhone to take a picture each day for a year. I'm a week late in posting, but better late than never right? Without further ado, here's a few of my favorites/most memorable from September:

September 15: First PSL of the season. Deliciousness.

September 18: Mini-puddle jumper.

September 24: Pumpkin picking and and corn maze adventures at Cypress Cattle & Produce.

September 26: Happy birthday to me!

September 30: Can't get enough of this sweet face.

and a gif of all 30 days...

mom style remix: jackets

mom style remix jackets Since it's still all miserably hot in North Florida, today's jacket inspired #momstyleremix features a compilation of past jacket looks. Can it please cool off now, pretty please? :) I've got a serious case of jacket envy.

look #1: layered up
mom style remix jackets two up 1
jacket: Old Navy (similar)  |  sweatshirt: Loft (similar)  |  shirt: Loft (similar) |  pants: Loft (similar)  |   boots: Arturo Chiang (exact)  |  clutch: Clare V. (exact)  |  necklace: Kendra Scott (exact)  |  watch: Fossil (same face with a leather band)  |  bracelet: Bourbon and Boweties (exact)

Let's jump in with perhaps my favorite look of the bunch - a canvas jacket layered over a striped sweatshirt, dotted top, cozy leggings and riding boots. I originally put this look together for Mom Style Remix: sweatshirts, and I'm still waiting (okay, not so patiently waiting) for it to cool off so I can wear it in real life.

look #2: pop of color
mom style remix jackets two up 2
jacket: Old Navy (similar)  |  jeans: American Eagle (similar)  |  sweater: J. Crew Factory (similar)  |  scarf: Charming Charlie  |  purse: Coach (current version) |  shoes: Madewell (similar)  |  watch: Fossil (same face with a leather band)  |  bracelet: Moorea Seal (similar)

Another Mom Style Remix throwback, but I'm still a fan of the fun pop of pink in an otherwise neutral look.

look #3: chambray and striped kicks
mom style remix jackets two up 3
jacket: Old Navy (similar)  |   chambray: J. Crew Factory (exact)  |  tee: Loft (similar)   |   jeans: American Eagle (similar)  |  sneakers: Sperry (exact)  |  bag: Coach (current version)  |   necklace: Kendra Scott (exact)  |  watch: Fossil (same face with a leather band)
Originally from Mom Style Remix: sneakers, this look is all about natural, casual layers with a pair of fun, striped sneakers and pops of cognac.

look #4: dressed up
mom style remix jackets two up 4
jacket: Old Navy (similar)  |  tee: Target (similar)  |  skirt: Boden (similar)  |  sandals: Target (similar)  |   necklaces: JewelMint (similar pendant) and Anne Emma Jewelry via Etsy (similar teardrop)

Inspired by Merrick, this outfit is all about elevating a basic look. Perfect for work or weekend, the pencil skirt is dressy but the casual jacket and flats help tone down the look.

look #5:simply casual
mom style remix jackets two up 5
jacket: Old Navy (similar)  |   shirt: Loft (similar)  |  shorts: Loft (similar)  |   sneakers: Sperry (exact)  |  bag: Sole Society (exact)  |  necklace: Loft (similar)  |  watch: Fossil (same face with a leather band)

Florida's tricky this time of year since it's still hot during the day, but decidedly chilly at night. Another look from Mom Style Remix: sneakers, this outfit is perfect for warm days with shorts and cool nights with a chic jacket.

look #6: stripes and leopard print
mom style remix jackets two up 6
jacket: J. Crew Factory (retail version)  |  shirt: Loft (similar)  |  jeans: The Limited (similar)  |   shoes: Madewell (similar)  |  necklace: Kendra Scott (exact)

I found this jacket last year in store at J. Crew Factory and it's quickly become one of my favorites in my closet. I first wore it on the blog a year ago with black and white stripes, and apparently stuck with a black and white theme...

look #7: a gray sweater
mom style remix jackets two up 8
jacket: J. Crew Factory (retail version)  |  sweater: J. Crew Factory (similar)  |  shirt: Loft (similar) |  jeans: Banana Republic (similar)  |    shoes: Madewell (similar)  |  necklace: Kendra Scott (exact)  |  watch: Fossil (same face with a leather band)

...See, told ya last winter I had a black and white theme going with black jeans and a dotted top layered under a cozy gray sweater. :)

look #8: for the love of dots
mom style remix jackets two up 7
jacket: J. Crew Factory (retail version)  |  shirt: Loft  |  pants: Loft (similar)  |   boots: Arturo Chiang (exact)  |  bag: Coach (current version)  |   necklace: Kendra Scott (exact)  |  watch: Fossil (same face with a leather band)

Black and white dots and leggings, what's not to love? This outfit was warm and comfortable - two of my cool weather outfit musts.

Thanks to Anne and Jenn for hosting the #momstyleremix series! Be sure to check out the other linkup for some great jacket inspiration.

I've been saying for weeks if I could just finish my magazine project for work, life would return to normal. At least that's how it's gone in year's prior. Crazy busy in the fall, with a blessed reprieve by the end of September. Well, that's not exactly what happened this year. I did finish the magazine, but ironically I've been just as busy - if not busier - since then. It's been a mad dash of playing catch up at work and home, running around like a crazy thing and still not back to consistent posting. But hang with me, I've got some great posts in the works - including this tomorrow's installment of #momstyleremix - and this year's version of my viewed post - the Five Day Getaway Fall Packing List - coming later this month.

In the meantime, here's some fun pictures I took all the way back in July - yikes time has flown - but I actually think this look more fall appropriate anyway with the pop of mustard and fun boots. So, it all worked out I suppose. :)

currently I am...

cheers-ing: the completion of my largest work project of the year! After a bit of catch-up this week, life is finally settling back to normal - no more late nights and extra hours at work - just in time for my favorite season - bring on pumpkin spice everything. :)

organizing: nothing at the moment, but I have plans to tackle my closet in the very near future. Amazing how quickly that space get so, so messy so quickly...

dreaming: of our upcoming family vacation to Gatlinburg. Bring on the cool temps, cozy scarves and fun times with family!

buying: all the yarn. Something about fall makes me want to make all the cozy knitted things.

listening: to Ingrid Michaelson's new(ish) album, "It Doesn't Have to Make Sense."

Sharing with Anne and co-host Jacqui for Currently. Each month features a series of prompts that may be interpreted any way you wish.

chambray all day, every day:  one  |  two  |  three

blog love:

on teal and polka dots:

favorite sales:
  • what I'm watching: Episodes of Sofia the First with the kiddo while finishing up this post.
  • what I'm crafting: Something about fall makes me want to craft all the things. I've got two knit blankets, fall pillows, and Halloween costumes on my DIY plate - fun, but whew, I need to get busy...
  • what I'm crushing on: Now that it's officially October I want to put out all the autumn things - fall scented candles, fall wreaths, pumpkin everything and cheerful mums...hello fall!
  • what I'm looking forward to: My biggest work project on the year is done, done, done and I've slowly been returning to a normal work/life schedule. I'm taking tomorrow off as a day to just regroup and relax (and more than likely craft) and I am beyond looking forward to it.
