happy checks

A day later than promised, but here's how I wore my new cardigan from Modcloth. There's just something so bright and cheerful about the color yellow. Combine it with fun checks and a comfy belted cardigan and you have the perfect fall outfit. Hopefully it was worth the extra day's wait to see.:) Sadly this exact yellow one is out of stock, but the same style of cardigan is available in green and blue and blue and red. Love the blue and red version.

Speaking of being behind on things, am I the only person that's not bought a single Christmas present yet? I was talking to one of my friends yesterday and she informed me that she bought her very final present on Black Friday. I feel like such a slacker! Other Christmasy things I'm behind on: decorating the tree, putting out family Christmas cards, and we have yet to watch a single holiday movie. Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend...

November budget: $233.19

I was all about patterns and jewel tones this November. Fall/winter are my favorite seasons to dress (and buy) for, so it was hard not to buy all the pretty, shiny new things. So while I was a bit spendy, I'm happy this month's purchases.

1. Loft puff sleeve sweater (sorta sneak peak here)
Confession, I got this to wear as part of our family Halloween costume, but with every intention of also wearing it in real life! It's an XL and I think a little snugger and shorter than some of my other Loft sweaters, but still very cute. I'm anxiously waiting for some cooler weather so I can wear it...
2. Old Navy swing pintuck top (see how I wore it here)
I threw this top into the cart while buying a few outfits for the kiddo. I thought it looked a little short on the model, so I got a L tall and am pleased with the longer fit. Super cute top for $9!

3. Modcloth plaid cardigan (post on how I wore it tomorrow!) & 4. Modcloth stripe dotted top (sneak peak here)
Modcloth's Facebook marketing got me big time with their adorable plaid belted cardigan and mixed dot/stripe top. The cardigan is an XL and fits true to size - though the sleeves are just a touch long. The top is a L, only because the XL wasn't available, but I think it fits big more like an XL.

5. J. Crew Factory printed tuxedo top
Can I tell you how much I can't wait for all the holiday parties so I can wear this top? I love the fun plaid and the tuxedo style. One thing to note: the fabric is polyester and not flannel - which is what I expected, even though the website clearly says it's made out of poly. Buuut...that means no ironing, so that works for me! For reference, it's an XL.

6. J. Crew ruffle dot top
Polka dots and ruffles? Ya'll know I'm ALL about that. This top is an XL and is made from a soft, slightly sheer fabric. Perfect for Florida's non-fall. I've worn it a several times, but blogger fail, have yet to take any pictures with it on.

7. J. Crew Factory pencil skirt in double-serge wool
I was so pleased with my J. Crew Factory green wool pencil skirt, that I decided to get the plum as well. It's also a 16 and runs true to size.

8. Bourbon and Boweties pearl bangle bracelet (see how I wore it here)
I wear my original Bourbon and Boweties pearl bangle constantly, as you may have noticed on the blog, and had originally planned to buy a second identical one, but changed my mind once I saw this cluster version. So pretty! (Spoiler, I may also have the other one coming my way. Pearl bangle arm candy goals :).

One more quarter left for the fourth quarter budget - and for the year - crazy how quickly this year has flown! Looking toward December, I have the aforementioned bracelet coming my way as well as this pair of Sam Edelman flats scored during the Black Friday sales. I've been majorly, shamelessly crushing on them since seeing them on Fran. :) I kind of anticipate it being a quiet shopping month since the focus will instead be on Christmas presents.

thankful for...

In honor of Thanksgiving, I thought it would be fun to share 11 things I am thankful for. Some serious, some silly, without further ado, here's the list:

  1. my loves - my two favorite people in the world: my husband and daughter
  2. coffee - a morning must. I'd take it through an IV drip if I could. :)
  3. freshly painted house - we finally got a fresh coat of paint on the house. Love the way it turned out!
  4. Gilmore Girls - oh my gosh one of my all time favorite shows. Beyond excited to binge watch the "Year in the Life" starting tomorrow.
  5. cozy scarves - the temps are finally starting to drop and it's almost cool enough to wear my beloved scarves.
  6. friends near and far - a shout out to my dear friends, both those who live close and others across the country.
  7. holidays with family - for those of you who don't know, I was in hospital last Christmas and I am beyond thankful that I will be here and able to enjoy the holidays with my family. Love this time of year!
  8. hot cocoa cupcakes - I discovered this hot cocoa cupcake recipe on Pinterest and decided to give it a whirl. Oh, my gosh you guys, they're freaking amazing. I whipped up this batch to take to today's Thanksgiving Day feast. Today's humidity meant my whipping cream frosting refused to peak, so I substituted this easy buttercream frosting instead.
  9. sleep-in Saturdays - my sweet husband takes morning kiddo duty on Saturdays - sleeping-in is sheer bliss!
  10. beach walks - one of the great things about living less than a mile from the beach is getting to see these gorgeous sunsets while strolling along the beach.
  11. good reads - reading is my favorite pastime. Maeve Binchy, Cecelia Ahern and Sarah Addison Allen are some of my absolute favorite authors.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving full of good food, family and fun!

pin to present: nutcracker makeover

pin to present nutcrackers 9

When I saw these adorable Mrs. Nutcrackers by Kate I knew I needed a set of my own. So stinking cute and for only $3 from the Dollar Tree, who cared if they became a Pintrosity hot mess?!?

I pretty much followed Kate's tutorial, but modified a few things here and there. After sanding these guys down and adding craft paint, the pink and aqua were so light that the original color kept showing through, so I painted them all white as a base layer then added color. Even then it took a good three (or four) coats to get everything covered. Also, though I started out using gold craft paint, I switched to a metallic paint pen for the gold since it covered SO much better. I love the super shiny metal look it added! Kate stuck with craft paint, paint pens and repurposed the hair into a chic shirt, but I raided my my craft supply to make a little tulle skirt, necklace and wand for the ballerina, added a ribbon accent to the brim of the aqua soldier and yarn hair to the metallic nutcracker.

Pintrosity these little ladies are not - if I do say so myself - and they're now happily living in my office at work. Mainly because the little one is obsessed with them and has made it her mission to try to pull them apart. So I rescued them by adding them to my office holiday decor. :)

These are the actually second set of nutcrackers I bought since I, er, misplaced the first set. But last night I found the originals hiding in my kitchen, so I might have to make another trio. What should I do next? Traditional Christmas colors? Silvers and blacks? My husband says Metallica, I say no... The possibilities are endless!

pleats and dots

teal midi, polka dot tippi and bow flats 2

Slightly chillier days have been the perfect excuse to breakout some of my lighter sweaters - like this dotted tippi from J. Crew. I decided to paired it with one of my beloved midi skirts in an attempt to transition some of my summer staples into the fall. I retrospect, I think a pair of nude heels would have really made this outfit, buuuuttt I real-life I wore flats, so I wanted to show you exactly how I wore it. :) Keeping it real, ya'll.

Looking forward to a quiet (and short!) work week. As a married couple, we alternate whose house we go to for Thanksgiving, so this year we'll be spending it with my husband's side of the family. Each year, one of his cousins host a huge family reunion. I've noticed several bloggers are showing their Thanksgiving Day outfits, but I've been more focused on what dish to bring. Let's be honest, food is always > than clothes. :) Chances are it'll be jeans and a cardigan - my outfit go-to. Though I may have to switch out the jeggings for my favorite pair of ponte leggings, I'm betting I'll need the extra room for my food baby!

Had to show a closeup of these Mariana earrings my husband got me for our 5-year wedding anniversary. Aren't they pretty? Sadly, I can't find the this exact pair, but this style with pearls and this pair are pretty darn close!

  • what I'm reading: I just started reading Alice Hoffman's Faithful and it's so good. Beautifully written with a great depth of characters. It's a poignant look at love and loss how to rediscover life after experiencing tragedy. Highly recommend!
  • what I'm watching: We have a little family tradition to watch the Harry Pottery series in the fall. We just finished the Prisoner of Azkaban, so we're just about half way through...
  • what I'm crafting: Working on a second knit mermaid tail blanket. One down, one started, one to go before Christmas...
  • what I'm crushing on: I looking for a replacement for my office Christmas tree and there's just so many cute options out this sparkly silver tinsel tree, this snowy tree with a burlap base, this whimsical silver lit tree and this realistic looking pre-lit pine mini tree.
  • what I'm looking forward to: Thanksgiving! It's always nice to spend time with family, eat delicious turkey (yum) and have a few extra days off from work. :) Gooble gooble!

faking fall

While it may be getting chilly in other parts of the U.S, it's been stubbornly warm (and dry) here in the south. So my booties are a nod to fall while a short sleeve shirt keeps things light and comfortable.

This pair of Vince Camuto booties are one of my favorite cooler weather purchases I made last winter. Since it isn't cold here all that often, they're the perfect way to wear boots without going for a full-on riding boot. Santa may just have to get me these same booties in cognac, amiright? Hint, hint...

For all ya'll in the south and warmer west, how do you dress for fall? Any tips and tricks?

stripes + floral

I know, I know, long time, no blog. I can blame it on a lot of things: lack of time, busyness of the season, not feeling like I have much to say, wanting to focus on other things...the list goes on. I'm sure a lot of you are in the same boat.

Since it has been a while since I've posted, I thought it would be fun to share a few random things I've been up to lately:
Oh, and managed to take a few outfit photos, including this simple outfit with floral + stripes for the pattern-mixing win. Bonus points because it was finally cool enough (or one day at least) to wear a light scarf!

Last week while driving through the Great Smoky Mountains, we took a break to take in the pretty fall leaves and capture a few outfit photos. It was in the 80s for most of the trip - freakishly warm for this time of year in the Tennessee mountains - but in the higher elevations just cool enough to get away with a light poncho.

This outfit was so comfortable in real life, but I feel like it's kinda blah in photos. Something about the rolled up sleeves really bug. But surrounded by all these bright leaves, who's really looking at clothes anyway? And next time, I'll remember to keep my sleeves down. :)

mom style remix: tote bags

I'm not much of a tote bag kinda girl. The large size feels more appropriate for beach days and long trips, however a smaller tote that's big enough to hold a decent amount of stuff without being annoyingly bulky - like this geometric tote from Stella & Dot - is a good compromise! I've taken this tote on two long-distance trips (as a carry-on bag to Michigan and catch-all bag to Tennessee), on several day trips and just running errands around town. Sadly, the exact version of the bag is no longer available, but Stella & Dot does has a gorgeous neutral chevron version - LOVE!

look 1: pink and navy
bag: Stella & Dot (neutral chevron version)  |  top: J. Crew Factory (cute alternative)  |  pants: Loft (similar)  |  cardigan: J. Crew (exact)  |  sandals: Loft (cute alternative)  |  watch: Fossil (same face with a leather band) |  bracelet: Bourbon and Boweties (exact)

The first way I styled this bag was with pink pants and a navy top for a casual work or weekend look.

look 2: boho chic
bag: Stella & Dot (neutral chevron version)  |  top: Old Navy (exact)  |  jeans: American Eagle (exact)  |  booties: Vince Camuto (exact)  |  necklace: Kendra Scott (exact)  |  watch: Fossil (same face with a leather band)  |  bracelet: Bourbon and Boweties (exact)

This tote was perfect for last Friday's day date to the movies (ideal for smuggling in Twizzlers and such, amiright?).

look 3: chambray all day
bag: Stella & Dot (neutral chevron version)  |  top: J. Crew Factory (exact)  |  pants: Loft (similar)  |  sandals: Loft (cute alternative)  |  necklace: Stella & Dot (exact)  |  watch: Target (similar)  |  bracelets: Kendra Scott cuff (similar) and SageKandCo (designer dupe, designer original)

look 4: preppy pencil skirt
bag: Stella & Dot (neutral chevron version)  |  shirt: GAP (exact)  |   cardigan: J. Crew Factory (exact in other colors)  |  skirt: J. Crew Factory  (exact)  |  shoes: J. Crew Factory (exact)  |  necklace: J. Crew Factory (exact)

A smaller tote can be work appropriate, especially when dressed up with a pretty pencil skirt. I wore this to work yesterday, and it worked great for all my usually everyday stuff and camera.

look 5: T-shirt and jeans
bag: Stella & Dot (neutral chevron version)  |  jeans: American Eagle (similar)  |   T-shirt: Out of Print (exact)  |   sandals: Loft (cute alternative)  |  necklace: Stella & Dot (exact)  |  watch: Target (similar)  |  bracelets: Kendra Scott cuff (similar) and SageKandCo (designer dupedesigner original)

A fun, casual outfit for day tripping. To make it fall appropriate, I'd throw on a cargo jacket, scarf and booties.
