  • what I'm looking forward to: Meeting our baby boy! Unless he comes early, we're scheduled for an induction (since he's a big boy) this Thursday. We don't plan on having any more children, so it's been weird thinking how this is the end, the last time I'll feel sweet baby kicks, the last time I'll grow a life, it's a very bittersweet feeling.

september budget

september budget

september budget: $97.57
third quarter budget: $600 - $234.85 in July - $217.34 in August - $97.57 in september =
$50.24 under for the third quarter

This was the month to buy all the things, just not all the clothing things. I was heavily focused on getting Aubrey's big girl room and baby's nursery ready and buying things like bedding, lamps, curtain rods, etc. Plus there were all the last minute things to buy for the diapers, and wipes...

So I only bought three clothing things, and the dress was actually purchased last month for our babymoon to St. Augustine, but I forgot to include in August's budget. *opps* For reference, the blue embroidered dress (see how I wore it here) is non-maternity, and I got it an an XL, which still left plenty of room for a big baby bump, so I definitely think it runs large. It was perfect for the sweltering Florida heat and it'll be great to wear next summer post baby. :) The shoes were a complete impulse buy, but they were so pretty, so velvet, so garnet. I'm anxiously awaiting to wear them this fall since my swollen pregnant feet aren't fitting into anything but flipflops these days. Last, but not least, is this adorable striped back cardigan. I love the neutral front and bold patterned back. Sadly, it's sold out at J. Crew right now, but it's been popping in and out of stock, so it's worth checking back if you're interested. For reference, it runs large - I bought mine in a L.

I did pick up a few things that didn't make it into the budget, like a new Lily Jade diaper bag, which I'm completely obsessed with. And a nursing nightgown from GAP that's currently in the hospital bag. My husband also got me the prettiest Kendra Scott rose gold drusy stud earrings for my birthday.

Looking toward October, I don't anticipate clothes shopping too much since I'll be busy with baby and in that awkward post-baby body phase. I did however order this resin-coated twill rain jacket from in navy from J. Crew Factory earlier this summer, which was waitlisted until October 19. So that'll be a fun mid-month treat!

final bump update

maternity navy maix, long tan cardigan 7

I can hardly believe that today's the final bump update before baby boy arrives! We're 38 weeks today, with plans to induce (hooray for a canceled c-section) next Thursday, October 5. Though at yesterday's checkup, the doctor said I'm already in the early phases of labor, so he very well may make his debut early. His sister was a full week early, so we'll see if he's an early bird as well. I'm so thankful this little guy decided to do what the doctor's said was "impossible" (due to his large size), and turn head down. The nurses and doctor himself kept saying "this never happens." So, we're happy to be the exception. At yesterday's ultrasound he was measuring at 9 and a half pounds - though that's really more of an approximation - so not so huge that he can't be delivered. Fantastic news all around.

My parents are driving down from Tennessee today so they'll be here for the birth and a few weeks after to help out - which we're incredibly grateful for. They missed Aubrey's birth by something like two days since she came earlier than expected, so I'm so glad they'll be here for baby #2, and Aubrey's just excited that she gets to spend time with Nana and Papa.

Tomorrow is my last day at work. Last time around I worked right up to the end, but I'm definitely feeling more tired this go around, so I'm looking forward to *hopefully* have a few days to rest and prepare before he makes his grand entrance. Which I attempted with Aubrey, but she came the day after I started my maternity leave. You just never know with babies...

life lately

Since I've been a bit MIA on the blog lately, I thought it would be fun to do a little update on what I've been up to lately.

kids rooms
Aubrey's big girl room  |  baby boy nursery  |  never ending crib blanket project

kids rooms:
When Hurricane Irma tore through Florida the week before last, the university I work for decided to close down for the week. Though a lot of Florida experience power outages and destruction, Panama City didn't end up seeing much from the storm (we never lost power and only had one backyard downed tree). So my husband Matt and I and took advantage of the week off and made major progress of both Aubrey's big girl room and the nursery. Neither room is quite done yet, but once they're a little more finalized, I plan on doing separate blog posts (with lots of pictures)! I'm also getting super close on being finished with baby's crib blanket, *hopefully* I'll be able to finish it before he arrives.

red velvet birthday cake  |  birthday present for my stepmom  |  pretty birthday earrings for me!

birthday celebrations:
My dad, stepmom and and I all have September birthday, so I've had a lots of fun shopping for birthday presents. Since my parents are coming in town later this week to be here when baby arrives, we've decided to celebrate all three birthdays together, which should be lots of fun. My birthday was yesterday, and I had a great time eating delicious Mexican and having red velvet cake with my office mates.

work projects
retractable banners, magazines and posters, oh my!

work projects:
With less than a week until maternity leave begins, I've been super busy trying to wrap up work projects. My most extensive project of the year is our annual magazine - which I design, edit and write a large amount of the content for - goes to press this Friday. *eek* I keep telling the baby he has to stay in my belly until I get the magazine sent! On top of that, I have quite a few other work projects I'm trying to wrap up as well. Whew, it's been busy. But it'll be good to know I wrapped up everything I could before going on maternity leave.

fall decorating
DIY blue pumpkins  |  fall mantel  |  Dollar Spot at Target score

fall decorating:
Even though it's still 90+ degrees in Florida, now that it's officially fall, I couldn't resist putting up some fun, pumpkin decor on our fireplace mantel. There's also a slew of fall pillows I'd love to get... my husband says I have a pillow obsession...but how cute would these gray gingham, pumpkin and thankful pillows look on the sofa? Speaking of decorating, now that we have a front porch, I'd love to go nuts with pumpkins and mums, but realistically, with the new baby, it'll probably will have to be a next year goal.

We're in the last push before baby comes. Depending on what the doctor says at today's appointment, Friday will probably be my last day of work before starting maternity leave. I still need to finish up some things for the nursery, do some last minute washing/cleaning/laundry before baby comes, and finish that darn crib blanket, so I'm looking forward to hopefully have a few days off before he arrives. But you never know with babies...I planned for a long weekend off before Aubrey's scheduled induction and she ended up coming four days early!

purple maternity dress

maternity purple dress, long blush cardigan 6

Today's my birthday! There's something that feels very mature about turning 35, maybe it's because according to my OBGYN I'm now of "advanced maternal age" *bleh*, or maybe it's being a momma of a three-year-old with one on the way, but whatever the reason, there's something very adult about being in my mid 30s. I've loved my 30s so far - I married the love of my life a year before turning 30, finished grad school at 30, had my daughter at 31, started Teal and Polka Dots at 32 - and this year bought our dream house and am having our baby boy in about a week! All in all a very good first half of the decade. :)

I'm working today, so no big plans for the big 3-5, just a long lunch with hubby and delicious red velvet cake (my favorite) with my office mates this afternoon. My husband surprised me with the prettiest rose gold drusy earrings for my birthday and a magnifying wall mirror so my old eyes can finally, properly see my face. I love getting birthday goodies!

olive maxi

maternity olive dress, tan cardigan 2

I've gotten to that point in my pregnancy where everything is swollen. Puffy face, fat fingers and wrists, cankles and 10 little sausage toes. Even my eyelids are swollen, which I didn't even realize was possible. :) I've long since given up being able to wear my wedding rings or even my watch - which basically means I feel like I'm running around naked. Oh, the joys of late pregnancy and hot, humid summer days.

So that's one of the reasons why I haven't been taking (or posting) many photos lately, I've been feeling less than attractive in my final weeks. Forgive me for my vanity. Oh, well, I suppose we can't all look glamorous up to the end of pregnancy, though I know that sweet baby is going to make it all more than worth it.

Today makes 37 weeks pregnant and time for another bump update! Baby boy is approximately the size of a head of romaine lettuce, 18 inches long and was about 6 lbs. 13 oz. at last Friday's ultrasound. We got some great news at the ultrasound - baby has turned head down (which we were told would be impossible due to his large size) and is smaller than originally anticipated. So instead of being in the 90 percentile for size, he's now in the 65th, and tracking to be approximately 8-9 lbs at birth. A totally deliverable baby, which means we may get to cancel the c-section! My OB was on vacation last week and this week as well, so we won't know for certain what the plan will be until our appointment next Wednesday. I'm praying for good news, I'd really like to delivery this baby naturally if possible.

We made a lot of progress on his nursery last week, we're just waiting for my parents to bring his dresser from Ikea next week, we need to hang artwork and the crib bumper *still* hasn't shipped. I'm still working on that darn knitted crib blanket and, hopefully, will have it done by the time he arrives. But all his clothing and bedding is washed and ready, new padding for the car seat arrived (changing it from sister's bright pink to black/gray) and his diaper bag arrived today! Now to pack it for the hospital...There's been such a difference preparing for second baby vs. first. With Aubrey we had everything ready weeks in advance, but this time around, everything's been last minute. Just two weeks to go (and counting)...

monday musings: weeks 33-37

monday musings_header

You guys, without me even really realizing it, I've gotten majorly behind on Monday Musings. I blame it on vacation, holiday weekends, Hurricane Irma and wanting to post something else on Monday... either way, today's a major catch up day. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Monday Musings is "get to know you" style Q&A. I invite you to join in the comments below so I can get to know you as well.

Q1: What are three of your favorite books?

A1: Ooo...this is seriously tough one, it's so hard to pick favorites! I'm going to go with my gut and pick the first three books that pop into my head: Circle of Friends by Mauve Binchy, Pride and Prejudice and Little Women. Mauve Binchy is one of my absolute all-time favorite authors, I love pretty much everything she's written. Circle of Friends was the first book I read by her, which started a literary love-affair that's lasted many years. I read Pride in Prejudice for the first time in high school, but really fell in love with Austen while studying abroad in college. Little Women was my favorite childhood book, I read it so many times the book jacket cover literally fell off. If you don't feel like reading the books, here's my favorite movie adaptions: Circle of Friends with Minnie Driver and Chris O'Donnell, BBC's Pride and Prejudice mini series and Little Women with Winona Ryder, Kiresten Dunst and Claire Danes.

Q2: If you could meet a real-life celebrity who would it be?

A2: Ben Folds. I'm seriously in awe of his talent - what would I give to be able to play the piano like him! And to have that kind of songwriting talent. Plus, he seems like he's pretty normal and down-to-earth in real-life. I'm still sad I missed him with the Atlanta Symphony three years ago, but I was about to pop with my daughter at the time I didn't want to risk traveling.

Q3: What's been one of the biggest challenges in your pregnancy?

A3: I've had a few health hiccups that I have been a bit of a challenge, like being diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Most recently, I've had a troublesome root canal become reinfected which has caused me an immense amount of pain, not to mention is hard to treat while pregnant. But, all that being said, overall I've been blessed with a pretty uncomplicated pregnancy.

Q4: What's been one of the greatest things about your pregnancy?

A4: I feel like so many wonderful things have happened during this pregnancy - purchasing our dream home, getting to experience the wonder of being pregnant again, being able to let the world's biggest food baby hangout and not have to worry about it...but seriously, overall it's been a wonderful experience. We weren't sure if we were going to have any more children after having our daughter, but I'm glad it worked out for us to have one more, and a boy should be extra fun!

Q5: Are you going to continue blogging after the baby is born?

A5: I absolutely want to keep blogging, but I do plan on taking a break to focus on the baby and family. I'm sure not how long the break will last, or what exactly it'll look like, but I do plan on coming back to this space.

Whew, and that gets us all caught up. Hard to believe there's only a handful more Monday left this year. Do you have any questions you'd like me to answer? Let me know in the comments below, or email

  • coming up on the blog: This might be an odd blogging week. The university I work for has been shut down for the next week due to Hurricane Irma, so I might take full advantage of not having to dress up and spend the next week in leggings and over sized T-shirts (seriously the most comfortable maternity wear ever) so I don't know if I'll have any exciting - or any outfits - to showcase. So I'm not sure what will be going on the blog at this point...

black and white

maternity black pants, black and white stripe tee, kimono cardigan, birkenstocks 2

This outfit is all about basic neutrals - blacks and whites without a single pop of color. Which was unintentional, but I can't say that I hate it. As much as I love color, sometimes it's nice just to go with something that can be easily mixed and matched. Okay or maybe I was just having a case of the lazies. The outfit kind of went like this: do I want to bother with shaving my legs? Nope - okay, pants it is then. Top - I think the black and white stripe is clean...score! Cardigan - this one was at the top of the pile. Shoes - these were the ones sitting by the door - perfect. And there you have it - my no thinking about it outfit. :)

Unrelated to outfits or laziness - happy birthday to my dad! He pops on here every once and awhile, so dad if you're reading this, I hope you've having the best of days!

Today makes 35 weeks pregnant and time for another bump update! Baby is approximately the size of a honeydew melon, over 18 inches long and 5 1/4 pounds - in theory, but at the last ultrasound they said he's more like four weeks ahead in size, so who really know what to compare him to? :) I have my next doctor's appointment tomorrow, but everything's been coming along nicely. Today makes exact one month until we get to meet him - we have c-section scheduled for October 5 (due to him being frank breech and very large) - unless he decide to make an early appearance of course!

9.6.17 currently

currently I am...

celebrating: all the September birthdays in my family. My dad's birthday is the 7th, my stepmom's is the 13th and mine's the 26th! It's good to be a September baby. :)

watching: the tropics. Hurricane Irma's path is still uncertain, but there's a possibility it will go into the Gulf of Mexico and hit Florida. It's just a wait and see game right now...

welcoming: fall, or at least the idea of fall since North Florida doesn't really cool off until November. But still, a girl can dream...and light an apple cider candle, drink a pumpkin spice latte and decorate everything with pumpkins. Is it too soon to decorate?

preparing: for baby boy. Tomorrow will be exactly one month until he arrives - if all goes according to plan of course. ;) He's frank breach and quite large (which means he's unable to turn) so we have c-section scheduled for Oct. 5.

photographing: St. Augustine! Husband and I took a quick babymoon to the lovely city last weekend. You can read my post about it and see pics on instagram.

Sharing with Anne and co-host Lowanda of Sunshine and Elephants for Currently. Each month features a series of prompts that may be interpreted any way you wish.

st. augustine (though the lens of my iPhone)

While my sweet parents were in town last week, they offered to watch the kiddo so husband and I could take a quick babymoon getaway. With the baby due in about a five weeks, we didn't want to venture too far away and chose to go to one of our favorite places: St. Augustine! Only five hours away from us, it's pretty much a horizontal straight shot across the state of Florida.

where we stayed:
After pricing out hotels vs. a B&B, we ultimately decided to stay at 44 Spanish Street Inn. We stayed there for our honeymoon (six years ago in November) and again for our 1-year anniversary. The B&B changed hands last October and new owners Brian and Emery are seriously amazing. We stayed in the Firzgerald room (located on the bottom, front right of the top picture). The renovations they've completed in the past year are incredible. Seriously, if you go to St. Augustine, I can't recommend this place enough. It's right in the heart of historic downtown and we literally walked to everything we wanted to do. It was so easy to pop back into our room to drop off packages or just to take a break during the heat of the day.

44 spanish st 44 spanish st 2

what we ate:
44 Spanish Street did a bang up job every morning for breakfast: poached eggs atop of a monte cristo sandwich, peach waffles, asparagus and ham quiche and a selection of delicious fruit and yummy coffee. We ate at our absolute favorite restaurant Harry's Seafood Bar and Grille (not once but twice!), chowed down on burgers at O.C. Whites, had authentic Spanish food at Columbia Restaurant and indulged in so many desserts: gelato at Cafe del Hidalgo, banana's foster with vanilla ice cream and Harry's, salted dark chocolate caramels from Whetstone was all so, so good.

what we ate

what we did:
One of the best things about historic St. Augustine is that pretty much everything is in walking distance. We spent a lot of time going up and down St. George Street in the Old City, explored the Castillo de San Marcos (the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S.), rang the bell at the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse, walked through Lightner Museum (which has some gorgeous Tiffany's glass) and attempted to tour Flagler College twice (but missed the 10 a.m. by five minutes and the 2 p.m. tour was canceled). Because of the intense heat, we took a break by jumping on the Old Towne Trolley which took us past all the major landmarks including the Old Jail, the Old Senator Tree (which is over 600 years old) and Mission of Nombre de Dios.

what we did

what I wore:
Since we knew it was going to be, I planned a lightweight packing list for the trip. I was pretty faithful to what I'd planned to wear, with the exception of a touristy tee on the last day since I knew we were going to be in the car for 5+ hours and just wanted to be as comfy as possible. And as I mentioned in yesterday's budget post - both the husband and I picked up new sandals at Kind Walking.

what i wore

And that was or trip. Short and sweet, but packed with a lot of fun. I'm already looking forward to the next time we get to go back. I love living within driving distance of such a neat old city!

august budget

august budget

august budget: $217.34
third quarter budget: $600 - $234.85 in July - $217.34 in August = $147.81 remaining

This was a little bit of an odd shopping month since about half the items were purchased last minute for an impromptu babymoon to St. Augustine. Both pairs of shorts, the blue kimono, black swing dress and cream lace top all fell into this category and (with the exception of the hated but needed shorts) all are happy editions to my closet.

On to the reviews. I'll start with the my least favorite - but desperately needed - shorts. These cream lace eyelet shorts are so cute (see how I wore them here) and very soft and comfortable. I did notice that they had a tendency to ride up while I was walking - probably because I have no thigh gap, so my thighs tend to rub. :( For reference, I bought these in an XL and they stretched a little bit throughout the day. Not enough to justify going down a size, but enough to note. The chambray scallop shorts (bought in a size 16) had the same two issues - they rode up a bit and stretched throughout the day. Since both shorts from two different stores did the same thing, I have to wonder if it was because of the high heat and humidity and lots of walking around or if they would have stretched anyway?

It was also a month for kimonos - though I think that's been every month lately. I found this plum lace kimono (see how I wore it here) in my local Target store and fell in love the with the color and lace details. For reference, it's an XXL. The paisley print kimono is something I've been eyeing for awhile, but at $69 full price was way to expensive to justify. When it went on sale I bought it, but my order was canceled due to lack of availability. Luckily, it popped back in stock and I was successful in snagging it the second time around. It's a M/L and I think runs a little large since I usually wear an XL at GAP.

I also added this maternity black swing dress (see how I wore it here) to my order when I purchased the kimono. My previous black maternity dress from Old Navy pretty quickly fell apart and I felt like this made a good replacement and as a bonus can be worn post-baby. It's super soft and comfy and runs a bit large - I got mine in a L instead of my usual XL.

From Loft, I ordered this pretty cream lace maternity top (see how I wore it here), which I had originally planned on wear on our babymoon trip, but ended up switching out for a tourist tee since most of the day was spent in the car. I am, however wearing it today and it's super lightweight and comfy. For reference, it's an XL. I also bought this fun graduated navy stripe cardigan (see how I wore it here). Did I need yet another stripe cardigan in my closet? Probably not, but I like that it's nice and light weight and since it's still going to be full-on summer for awhile in Florida, I should get lots of wear from it in the months to come. It's also an XL.

And last, but not least, the Birkenstocks (see how I wore them here). I feel like I learned a bit of a hard lesson with these sandals. They were only available in sizes 9 and 6 at my local Rack Room Shoes, for which I had a return and thanks to a promotion made them insanely cheap). I tried them on in store in my usual size 9 (size 40), and thought they might be a touch big, but I didn't want to lose out on the sale, so I decided to go ahead and buy them. They're pretty comfortable for light walking, but when I took them to St. Augustine they rubbed my feet completely raw along the top straps (adjusting the straps didn't help) and I felt like the foot bed wasn't sitting right either. Basically, they were driving me nuts. My husband's sandals broke - seriously we had the worst shoe luck on our trip - while we were out and about, so we went a walking shoe store close to our B&B to look for replacement shoes for him. While we were in there, I asked the shopkeeper what he thought might be going on with my Birkenstocks and he took one look at my shoes and said they were too big. I tried on an 8 (size 39) and the fit was sooooo much better. Night and day. So ended up buying a pair that actually fit from his store in the antique lace color just to have something a little different. I think the slightly too big ones will still be fine for light wear, so they aren't a complete loss. Lesson learned, make sure to buy the right size. :) I debated included the second pair in my budget, but ultimately decided to leave them out - along with a touristy tee and a pair of pink freshwater pearls - since they were vacation buys.

Looking ahead, September is my birthday month, so I'm sure there'll be a birthday splurge or two in next month's budget, though nothing in particular that I'm shopping for at the moment.

maternity black swing dress

maternity black swing dress and medallion sandals 3

I originally bought this dress to as a "backup" outfit for our trip to St. Augustine last weekend, but loved the casual ease of it so much, I had to wear it to work yesterday. It's super soft and comfy and I think it'll work great post-maternity. I have a feeling it'll be like my black and white stripe dress that's actually a maternity dress, but I wore it all.the.time. before I got pregnant.

Our babymoon was so lovey - thought very, very hot - but isn't pretty much everywhere in August? I took a ton of pictures (some of which you can see on my instagram) and *hopefully* will have a babymoon post up in the next day or two. Things have been a little extra crazy since we got back, which always seems to be the way after vacation.

Today makes 34 weeks pregnant and time for another bump update! Baby's been super active the past couple of days and I've been feeling lots of kicks and rolls. He's approximately 4 3/4 pounds, about the size of a cantaloupe and almost 18 inches long. With the intense heat we've been having, I finally hit the point where I'm ready to have this guy - but I know he needs to stay in there and cook a little bit longer. Plus we still have so much to do for his nursery. My sweet dad painted his room while we were gone - seriously he's the greatest - so now we have a few things left to buy and then we need to put it all together. I was convinced that when I was pregnant with Aubrey we got her nursery done months in advance, but I just went back and looked at photos and it was more like two weeks ahead of time. So I guess we're not as behind as I originally thought...
