help me pick - gala outfits

I just found I will be going to an awards gala this coming Thursday. The dress code is semi formal/formal - no jeans - and the theme is "It's a Red Carpet Evening." I'm not sure why, but for some reason the whole "no jeans" thing is really throwing me off. Semi formal/formal makes me think fancy, but it's since it's after work I suspect people going to show up in business attire. I've come up with four possible looks for the event, ranging from more formal to less so. I thought it would be fun to put it to a vote - ya'll decide - what outfit should I wear?

I think each outfit has merits as well as disadvantages, so here's a breakdown of the outfits:

gala outfit inspiration 1
skirt: eBay (similar)  |  tee: J. Crew Factory (exact)  |  heels: J. Crew Factory (exact)  |  earrings: Target (exact)  |  clutch: Clare V. (exact)

what I love about this look: The fun tulle skirt! Pairing it with a flutter sleeve white tee helps dress it down and some edgier accessories would help keep the outfit from looking too girly.

what has me hesitating: While I already own the skirt and leopard print clutch, I would have buy the heels, tee and earrings. And as much as I love this skirt, is it too much? Especially since I suspect some folks will show up in business attire. Then again, there's nothing wrong with being a flamingo in a flock of pigeons. :)

top: Loft (similar)  |  skirt: Amazon (exact) |  heels: Old Navy (very similar)  |  earrings: Baublebar (exact)  |  clutch: J. Crew Factory (similar)

what I love about this look: The fact that I already own (with the exception of the skirt) almost all the pieces to make this work. It's a classic look - you can't go wrong with black, amiright? (FYI: The black lace top I have from Loft look very similar to the top pictured, but is not a crop top, but I couldn't find a good flat lay image to use, so that's why there's a crop top in this layout.)

what has me hesitating: Honestly, not much. I really like the idea of this outfit and that it's dressy without being too out there. If people are more dressed down, I won't feel too out of place.

dress:GAP (exact)  |  heels: J. Crew Factory (exact)  | clutch: Rebecca Minkoff (exact)  |  earrings: J. Crew (exact)

what I love about this look: That I can get a lot of wear out of this dress post event. The most casual of the looks I've put together, the bright pink clutch (so fun!) and earrings help dress up the look.

what has me hesitating: The only thing I already own is the earrings. While I know I'd get a lot of use out of the dress (which is on sale for only $25!!!) I'm not sure how much I'll use the heels (only because I don't wear heels all that often) and clutch.

gala outfit inspiration 4
dress: boohoo (exact)  |  heels: J. Crew Factory (exact)  |  clutch: antik kraft (exact)  |  earrings: H&M (exact)

what I love about this look: The simplicity of this dress paired with bold accessories. I recently bought this dress from boohoo with plans to wear it for upcoming family photos, but it was much more va-va-voom in real life and a completely different color than it appears online. I ordered the dress in rose and thought it was getting a pretty berry pink but instead it's full-on blush (I color corrected for a more accurate representation). Still pretty, but not what was expected. I think these bold earrings and beaded clutch help liven up with look.

what has me hesitating: The sexy factor, which let's face it, it's really isn't my m.o. This dress will require strategic use of safety pins to keep the slit at a modest height and the top from gaping.

I know which looks are my favorite, but I'll let ya'll decide. Voting ends Sunday at midnight is now over. Votes are in - see all four looks, including the winner here.

What should I wear to the Gala?

  1. ooo so pretty! I love the first or second look!

  2. Ooooh so fun! It's been way too long since I've had an excuse to really dress up. I can see not wanting to be over-dressed, but I would also say you should take advantage of the opportunity :) These are all fab, but with a "red carpet" theme I would go with 2, 3, or 4, but if you're not quite as comfortable with the va-voom factor of 4 I would say go with 2 or 3. You want to feel confident!

You better take/share photos before the event of whatever you go with :)

    1. I absolutely plan to take photos! I've been playing around my with camera and remote so I can take some myself (instead of relying on the husband) before going to the event. :)

  3. I'm all about how you feel, whichever one makes you feel fabulous, is the perfect choice.
